Important note upon receipt:
The pouch containing the bioluminescent algae should be removed from the box immediately after delivery and placed in a bright location (e.g., by a window, but out of direct sunlight) at room temperature.
The algae can survive in the pouch for several months without any issues, provided they receive daily light.

Filling:
Pour the entire algae culture from the spout pouch into the GlowTime hourglass. Firmly insert the silicone stopper.

Placement:
A bright location with 12 hours of light daily, but without direct sunlight. Room temperature is ideal.

Making it glow:
Shake gently in the dark – the algae will begin to glow blue.

Briefly aerate weekly (remove the stopper). Add 15–20% ZeaLite Nutrient Mix (included in the delivery) approximately every two weeks.

FAQ

How does the algae glow?

The glow is created by a natural process called bioluminescence. Certain molecules in the algae, particularly the enzyme luciferase and the substance luciferin, react to mechanical stimuli such as movement. This reaction releases energy in the form of blue light. It's a purely biological process that requires no electricity, batteries, or artificial additives.

Why don't the algae glow immediately after filling?

After shipping, the algae need a few days to recover and resume their natural day-night rhythm (circadian rhythm). Glowing usually begins on the second day—but only during the night phase.

When and how do the algae glow?

The algae glow whenever you move them in the dark. Even a slight twist or a quick shake is enough for them to begin glowing in their signature blue hue. The algae are dormant during the day, but as soon as it gets dark, their nighttime magic begins.

Why do the algae glow at all?

In nature, bioluminescent microalgae such as Pyrocystis fusiformis use their glow as a defense mechanism. When exposed to movement, for example, due to predators or waves, they emit short flashes of light to irritate attackers or attract larger predators that could drive off the original attacker.

Is the content toxic?

No, the algae contained are non-toxic and harmless to humans.

However, they are in a seawater nutrient medium that is not suitable for consumption.

Furthermore, this is a non-sterile culture. Therefore, we cannot guarantee that it is free from other microorganisms. These products are intended for observation purposes only.
