FAQ

Bioluminescence Collection

How does the algae glow?

The glow is created by a natural process called bioluminescence. Certain molecules in the algae, particularly the enzyme luciferase and the substance luciferin, react to mechanical stimuli such as movement. This reaction releases energy in the form of blue light. It's a purely biological process that requires no electricity, batteries, or artificial additives.

Why don't the algae glow immediately after filling?

After shipping, the algae need a few days to recover and resume their natural day-night rhythm (circadian rhythm). Glowing usually begins on the second day—but only during the night phase.

When and how do the algae glow?

The algae glow whenever you move them in the dark, during the night phase. Even a slight twist or a quick shake is enough for them to begin glowing in their signature blue hue. During the day, the algae are dormant, but as soon as it gets dark, their nighttime magic begins.

Why do the algae glow at all?

In nature, bioluminescent microalgae such as Pyrocystis fusiformis use their glow as a defense mechanism. When exposed to movement, for example, due to predators or waves, they emit short flashes of light to irritate attackers or attract larger predators that could drive off the original attacker.

How long does the luminosity last?

Since the algae continuously double in size with sufficient light and nutrients, the culture can theoretically be maintained indefinitely.

In practice, however, contamination by other microorganisms or competing algae species can occur over time, causing the original luminosity to gradually decrease.

With proper care, the glow often lasts for several weeks to several months. If your culture no longer glows or changes color, please contact us directly at contact@zealite.com – we'll be happy to help.

Is the content toxic?

No, the algae contained are non-toxic and harmless to humans.

However, they are in a seawater nutrient medium that is not suitable for consumption.

Furthermore, this is a non-sterile culture. Therefore, we cannot guarantee that it is free from other microorganisms. These products are intended for observation purposes only.

Oxygen Collection – Algae Tower & Refill

How does the AlgaeTower work?

The AlgaeTower is a compact indoor photobioreactor. A living culture of the microalgae Chlorella vulgaris circulates inside. With the help of light and gentle ventilation from a quiet air pump, the algae conduct photosynthesis. They absorb carbon dioxide from the environment and release oxygen, similar to plants, only in a more concentrated and controlled manner.

Is the AlgaeTower really effective?

Yes, Chlorella vulgaris is one of the most efficient oxygen producers in the plant kingdom. Studies show that under optimal conditions, these microalgae can bind more carbon dioxide and produce more oxygen than any conventional houseplant. The AlgaeTower takes advantage of this property and offers an aesthetically pleasing and functional way to naturally improve indoor air quality.

How is the AlgaeTower operated?

The AlgaeTower is easily powered via the included USB-C cable.

Place it in a well-lit location, ideally near a window with indirect daylight or under a suitable LED light source. Direct sunlight should be avoided, as it can overheat the crop.

How often do I need to refill something?

For optimal oxygen production, we recommend replacing approximately 20 to 30 percent of the liquid with fresh nutrient medium (water and AlgaeTower Nutrient Mix) every 2 to 4 weeks.

Even without refilling, the AlgaeTower will generally function smoothly for up to three months. After that, we recommend a thorough cleaning and, if necessary, the use of a refill kit to renew the culture.

Is the content toxic?

No, the algae contained are non-toxic and harmless to humans.

However, they are in a freshwater culture medium that is not suitable for consumption.

Furthermore, this is a non-sterile culture. Therefore, we cannot guarantee that it is free from other microorganisms. These products are intended for observation purposes only.

Can I use the algae for aquariums?

Yes! Chlorella algae is also suitable as a natural food supplement for shrimp, filter feeders, and juvenile fish.
