Care Guide for your Bioluminescent Algae

ABOUT BIOLUMINESCENCE

Welcome to the ZeaLite Bioluminescence Collection.
Our products bring the fascinating magic of nature straight into your home.

Bioluminescence is the natural glow of living organisms, created by a chemical reaction inside their cells. Microalgae like the ones in our GlowBottles produce this magical light and, at the same time, contribute significantly to the oxygen production on our planet.

These algae are found in all the world’s oceans: in the North Sea as well as in Greece, France or the Maldives. For ZeaLite, they are carefully cultivated in Switzerland so you can experience this natural phenomenon at home.

Dive into the world of bioluminescence with ZeaLite.

GETTING STARTED

Place the pouch with the algae in a bright spot at room temperature as soon as possible.

Important
Avoid direct sunlight, as the algae could overheat and die.

Glowing algae are living microalgae. The better you care for them, the longer they glow and the more they multiply. All they need is light, a few nutrients and a little attention.

Although the algae themselves are non-toxic, they live in a seawater nutrient medium that is not intended for human consumption. Please do not drink.

CARE TIPS

For a healthy algae culture, keep the following in mind:

  • Open the pouch carefully and pour the entire contents into the container.
  • Put the silicone stopper back on the container and remove it once a month for a few minutes to let the algae breathe.
  • Place the container in a bright spot with indirect light or under an LED lamp. 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness are ideal.
  • Avoid direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Room temperature of around 22 °C is ideal.
  • The algae glow when moved in the dark. A gentle shake is enough to trigger the natural light show.
  • Only add fresh ZeaLite Nutrient Mix when a brown rim is visible, about 5 percent of the volume, usually every few weeks.
  • Always add it during the light cycle and use clean utensils.
  • If the glow fades, you can top up with a Refill Set.

Note
The algae only glow during their natural night cycle and when moved. Even if you darken the room during the day, the glow will only begin in their night phase.

CARE AND FEEDING OF YOUR ALGAE

After filling your container, wait about a week until you can see a brownish rim of algae at the water surface. This is a sign of a healthy culture. The algae do not move actively, but they can control their position in the water by changing their buoyancy.

Feed your container during the light cycle. Gently swirl the container to distribute the algae evenly. Make sure the ZeaLite Nutrient Mix is at roughly the same temperature as your container. Add small amounts of ZeaLite Nutrient Mix. About 5 percent of the total volume is sufficient. Observe the algae over the following days after feeding.

Once a brownish rim forms at the water surface again, you can feed again, but no sooner than about two weeks later. If you do not see a brown rim, please do not add any more Nutrient Mix.

Your container should be filled between one quarter and three quarters, ideally about half full. Excess algae can be transferred to a new container or shared with friends.

ZEALITE NUTRIENT MIX

The specially developed ZeaLite Nutrient Mix supplies your algae culture with all the essential nutrients for healthy growth and a strong glow.

It contains carefully balanced minerals, trace elements and other additives. The composition is tailored to the needs of bioluminescent algae and modelled on their natural marine habitat.

DAY AND NIGHT CYCLE

Our algae have an internal clock, known as the circadian rhythm. It distinguishes between day and night.

During the light cycle, the algae collect energy. During the dark cycle, they produce their glow. The algae do not glow during the day cycle.

The algae should receive at least 8 hours of light per day. A light cycle of up to 20 hours is possible.

If you want to adjust the day-night rhythm, you will need an LED lamp, a timer and a spot that is as dark as possible during the day.

Set the timer so the algae receive 10 to 14 hours of light during the night and stay in the dark during the day. The adjustment begins after a few days. After about a week, the new rhythm is stable.

IMPORTANT NOTE ON DELIVERY

If your algae do not glow right after delivery, that is completely normal.
Shipping is stressful for the algae, and they need 2 to 3 days to recover and return to their natural rhythm.

If the algae still do not glow from the fifth night onwards, please email us at contact@zealite.com.
We will gladly look into it and replace the algae culture free of charge if necessary.
